As part of our work as Marine Warranty Surveyors (MWS), we have been very fortunate to be involved with some Heavy Lifts.
We have worked in all of the major shipyards in South Korea and have worked on a number of major Offshore Projects, providing on-the-ground Marine Warranty oversight for the lifting and integration of high-value major components.
Here is an example of the Hyundai Heavy Industries floating Heavy Lift Crane HD 10000.
This crane has eight hocks each rated with Safe Working Load (SWL) of 1,250 Tones, meaning that the overall capacity of the crane is 10,000 Tones.

As part of our MWS responsibilities, we witness the testing and certification of all lifting equipment before any high-value components are lifted for integration with the main hull structures.
The lifting components also include shackles and wire ropes, slings or grommets.

The strong points on the equipment to be lifted are sometimes called Trunnions and these have to be expertly designed and professionally welded in place. Each strong point will be fully tested by a 3rd party specialist non-destructive testing company before the crane can be coupled up for the lifting operation.
It takes specialist teams of Riggers to safely install these huge shackles.

Sometimes, manmade fibre / composite ropes are used instead of wire rope grommets. These tend to be lighter to handle and in many cases, are stronger than a wire rope of equivalent size.
Here, we inspect the ‘SAMSON’ ® grommet (sling) for any damage before use.
This particular 64mm Diameter SAMSON® Grommet is rated for 2,400 Metric tons SWL
Lifting and integration of high-value assets in the marine environment is a very specialist process involving many levels of skilled and experienced people. We must know the exact weight of the equipment being lifted and its centre of gravity. With this information, the Lifting Engineers can calculate the best way to sling the structure and where to place the lifting points and the required factors of safety. Often, the lifting points (Trunnions) will be built into the structure of the asset, so that the load can be safely distributed. Once the asset has been integrated with the main platform, then the Trunnions may be cut off.
As Marine Warranty Surveyors, we must be aware of all the conditions related to a heavy lift and ultimately it is our responsibility to provide the ‘Go’ or ‘No Go’ decision to perform the lift having confirmed that all the risk mitigation elements have been performed correctly and based on the prevailing conditions on the day.
